2007 DDSD Statewide Awards
The Developmental Disabilities Supports Division (DDSD) honored the following people and agencies for demonstrating excellence in Meaningful Day services.  Awards were given in the areas of Best Employer and Employee, Individual Accomplishment, Professional Achievement, Provider Excellence, and Best Community Membership practices.

Community Best Practices, Individual Success of the Year
Domingo Romero, who participates at Tobosa Developmental Services in Roswell, was selected as the individual who has shown the best example of progress in the community. He is a true community member supported by effective community-based Adult Habilitation and Community Access Services offered at Tobosa.

Domingo’s volunteer contributions at the Boys and Girls Club are highly valued by the club staff and participants. He also is a member of People First of Roswell and participates in the self-advocacy program there. People First of Roswell is an advocacy group that promotes awareness of the strengths and gifts of individuals with developmental disabilities.

At a recent workshop with Advocates in Action from Rhode Island, Domingo surprised everyone with his public speaking ability. Domingo is learning to read and write at the Roswell Literacy Council. Domingo also likes to play pool at the Roswell Adult Center where he knows several other regulars.

Since transitioning from facility to community-based day services, Domingo can share his engaging personality with many more people. Now, he says he has “friends all over the place.”
