DIRECT SUPPORT PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD IN SUPPORTED EMPLOYMENT
Gladis Salcido, who is the service coordinator for the vocational program for Mosaic in Grants, received this award for providing leadership above and beyond the call of duty in advocating for Merlin and Donald, two individuals receiving Supported Employment services at Mosaic, and educating an employer in the community on the benefits of hiring individuals with developmental disabilities.

In 2005, Merlin and Donald were employed by a local village government in the Parks and Recreation Department. However, newly elected tribal officials in the village eliminated their jobs without notice. When Gladis learned of this, she immediately approached their supervisor, but encountered resistance. She persisted until she met with the Village Manager who believed that people with disabilities were too hard to work with and that the village was not obligated to continue supporting their jobs.

Many people would have given up, but Gladis brought the case before Advocacy Groups and anyone who would listen to her. A lawyer was willing to join her at no charge and the case took nearly a year and a half of dedicated time and effort. During that time Gladis and her team developed new jobs for Merlin and Donald. In the end, the court decreed that every village employee was to receive in-service training about developmental disabilities. Merlin and Donald were ultimately awarded for lost wages and damages.

Gladis emulates the spirit of freedom by breaking down barriers of stereotypes and misunderstandings through educating others about the value of people with developmental disabilities. She serves as a wonderful example of how one person can make a real difference in the lives of others.
