DIRECT SUPPORT PROFESSIONAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD IN MEANINGFUL DAY

Bryant Tabor, who was a staff member and support coach from Tobosa Developmental Services, has received this award for the exceptional work he did in supporting others with developmental disabilities to achieve positive life goals and also in supporting individuals with developmental disabilities to get involved by taking an active role in being a part of their community.  Tobosa Developmental Services brought Bryant together with Eddie Rhodes, who is a participant of Tobosa, and together they both decided to become involved with People First of Roswell. People First of Roswell is an advocacy group promoting awareness of the strengths and gifts of individuals with developmental disabilities. Bryant supported Eddie in the community for about three years and they shared a vibrant, warm and friendly relationship. During that time Bryant encouraged Eddie to speak for himself.

Bryant regarded Eddie as a capable individual and let Eddie take the lead, only stepping in when needed. He treated Eddie as an equal, an adult and a person first. Bryant had helped to clarify only after Eddie communicated first and was unsuccessful with listeners. Bryant supported Eddie and others to actively participate in People First of Rosewell, helping the members to understand business issues and make informed choices about these issues.

Bryant also supported Eddie on a routine basis, so that Eddie has control over his own life. For example, Bryant helped Eddie to obtain volunteer positions as a crossing guard at an elementary school and at the Humane Society, where he lined the animal cages with newspapers. Bryant has sincere respect and high regard for Eddie, which helped to build a positive image for Eddie in the community. Currently, Bryant has moved on to a new job but he will be missed.
