|
2006 ddsd statewide directors meeting award winners INDIVIDUAL ACCOMPLISHMENT AWARD IN MEANINGFUL DAY was awarded to Andrew Campbell and Marisa Lucero, home-based provider for R-Way in Espanola, New Mexico for personally demonstrating a desire to make positive life changes, getting involved in the community and encouraging personal creative expression. Andrew takes risks to make positive changes in his life. He has learned sign language to be able to participate in the deaf community. He also is involved in the art community and is a member of a theater group. As a member of the theater group, his communication has improved tremendously. As an artist, he creates paintings and sculpts with paper Mache, and works at the architectural iron works company where he was taught welding skills. An exciting moment for Andrew was his graduation of the Supported Employment program. This means that Andrew no longer needs a job coach. Andrew is also involved in his community where most of his friends live. He does a variety of jobs at the New Mexico School for the Deaf and attends church for the deaf with his friends. He loves to fish, hike and camp and has a rock garden that is special to him. He likes exercise so much that he also participates in the Special Olympics and recently went to China as an ambassador with his team mates. Andrew is a great example of living a full life in his community. October-2007 - Dave Farbrook
