Self-Directed Program
The Self-Directed Program began as a pilot project in 2001 through a grant by the Administration on Developmental Disabilities. The current program is a collaborative effort between the Department of Health, the University of New Mexico and individuals with Developmental Disabilities. A coordinator offers the tools needed to ensure the family or the individual's choices are realized and provides direction on services offered. In doing this, the family is given the freedom to decide on the best methods of obtaining services they need.
Self-Directed supports are flexible
The program is based the idea that individuals and their families receiving support should have a stake in participation in planning for using the resources to improve their lives. The families and/or the individual leads the decision making process and becomes a "provider" of services. They can "employ" staff and determine the type and amount of services needed. The program contracts with a provider to advise the family and the family "hires" the advisor. The advisor helps the family with questions on being an employer or assists with the purchasing of goods and services and helps the family keep track of the expenses and other related matters involving money or budgets.
Services and supports that center around the individual
This program makes use of structured services and supports as well as informal and natural supports. Services and supports that center around the individual with disabilities may include therapies, personal care, special clothing, adaptive equipment, staff training, respite, individual needs and other supports.
