Southwest Autism Network - University of New Mexico - Center for Development and Disability
Autism is a neurological disorder that interferes with normal development of reasoning, communication, and social interactions/skills. Its duration is expected to be life long. It usually appears within the first three years of life.
The Southwest Autism Network was created to enhance community-based services to individuals with the diagnosis of Autism. Its mission is to assist individuals and families understand Autism, receive supports and find published resources and training. Through the network, parents and professionals are given the opportunity to increase their understanding of individuals with autism. Skills can be obtained that enable the family to improve communication with the individual with Autism. Families interested in obtaining appropriate services for their children can access information through a resource binder that offers a directory of selected case management services specializing in Autism services and supports.
The following self-study courses are available online: Introduction to Autism, a three-hour training and Understanding and Working with individuals with Autism, a two-day training. Advanced trainings in autism are also available, however they are on a fee for service basis. Services and delivery consultation are available to assist families and service providers interested in technical assistance.
