SANTA FE – Governor Susana Martinez announced today that she has nominated Dr. Catherine Torres as secretary of the Department of Health. Dr. Torres is a practicing pediatrician at the Rio Grande Medical Group in Las Cruces as well as a dedicated public servant and community leader.
After nominating Dr. Torres, Governor Martinez stated, “I am encouraged that the Health Department will be headed by a practicing physician with an impressive record of public service. As a pediatrician, Dr. Torres knows first-hand the health needs of New Mexico’s children and families. Her input will be extremely valuable as I work to develop effective and practical public health policies.”
In addition to practicing medicine in Las Cruces, Dr. Torres has served on both the U.S. – Mexico Border Health Commission and the New Mexico – Sonora Commission. Dr. Torres also served on the Medical Advisory Committee of the Doña Ana County Detention Center and chaired the New Mexico Border Health Advisory Committee. She earned her B.S. and M.D. from the University of New Mexico in Albuquerque.
In response to her nomination, Dr. Torres said, “It is a privilege to be asked to serve as the Governor’s Health Secretary. I look forward to applying the real-world experience I have gained working with New Mexico children and families to the administration of the Department of Health and the development of public policy in order to keep the people of our state healthy.”
