Purpose

Sequoyah Adolescent Treatment Center is a thirty-six-bed residential treatment center. It is a facility of the Department of Health, State of New Mexico, accredited by JCAHO and Medicaid approved. The purpose of Sequoyah is to provide care, treatment, and reintegration into society for adolescents who are violent or who have a history of violence and have a mental disorder and who are amenable to treatment. Services are to be provided based upon the client's needs and integrated within the continuum of services offered throughout the state. The adolescent must have the cognitive capacity to benefit from verbal therapies and milieu programming offered at Sequoyah. Normally that would mean intellectual functioning at least within the borderline range. However, exceptions may be made for referrals to the Neuropsychiatric Unit.

Back to the Top Referral Process

Referrals to Sequoyah may be received from any source in the community. However, referrals of Medicaid Salud! participants must be made through the managed care organization. Referrals for children who are exempt from managed care must be made through the Children's Mental Health Services Review Panel in Santa Fe, New Mexico (505 827-5888). Referrals should include a packet of collateral information. A pre-admission evaluation will then be conducted by a member of the Clinical Staff, who will then present the case to the Evaluation Committee for discussion and approval.

Back to the Top Discharge and Aftercare

Discharge planning begins at the time of admission, with the needs of the resident and the custodian being continually evaluated throughout the treatment period. Services for continuing care are coordinated through the resident's managed care organization, the custodian, the Juvenile Probation and Parole office (if involved), and other community and treatment services to assure a smooth transition to a less restrictive setting.
