An Evening with Acting US Surgeon General Dr. Kenneth Moritsugu
and First Lady
Mrs. Barbara Richardson
New Mexico has among the highest rates of youth alcohol problems in the country, devastating the well being of families and burdening the state with economic costs of more than $700 million a year. Hosted by New Mexico’s First Lady, Mrs. Barbara Richardson and the Department of Health, the US Surgeon General Moritsugu visited New Mexico on Sept. 25-26, 2007.
Among his many presentations, he was interviewed by KNME's Gene Grant, the moderator of their Friday night public affairs program "In Focus" that aired on Sept. 28, 2007. The interview with the Surgeon General was then discussed among a panel of community leaders throughout New Mexico.
Since August 2006, Rear Admiral Kenneth P. Moritsugu, MD, MPH, has served as Acting Surgeon
General of the United States. Prior to this appointment, he served as Deputy Surgeon General. Having
completed residencies in internal medicine and in preventive medicine, Dr. Moritsugu is board certified
in preventive medicine and is a certified correctional health professional. The Surgeon General serves
as America's chief health educator by providing Americans the best scientific information available on
how to improve their health and reduce the risk of illness and injury.
