Background

The Pew Environmental Health Commission issued a report in 2001 calling for establishment of an environmental public health tracking network. This network would monitor the level of burden from environmentally related disease.

Since 2002, the Environmental Public Health Tracking Program (Tracking Program) has provided accurate and timely standardized information.

The Tracking Program collects, integrates, analyzes, and disseminates non-infectious disease, environmental, and socio-economic data from various sources. These include a collective of national, state, and local partners. This data and information can be found on the National Environmental Public Health Tracking Network (Tracking Network).

CDC's Tracking Program empowers people to make information-driven decisions that affect their health. These include public health practitioners, healthcare providers, community members, policy makers, and others.

A first for environmental health‎

This program is the first national effort to provide the United States with standardized data from multiple information systems. It includes health, environmental, and hazard data. And it includes linkage of these data as part of regular surveillance activities.

What's ahead

With 20 years of program successes, our understanding of the connections between public health and the environment is vastly improved. But there is more to do. Looking toward the future, we plan to continue and expand efforts to provide information that drives actions to improve health. We are striving to meet our vision for a world where data-informed decisions create healthy communities.

Funding recipients

CDC funds 33 recipients through a cooperative agreement. These recipients build, maintain, and implement local tracking programs and data networks; grow public health capacity and expertise in environmental health surveillance; and modernize data systems.
