Program Overview

The New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) seeks to train and develop a diverse workforce, which is essential to achieving its mission: “To ensure health equity, we work with our partners to promote health and well-being and improve health outcomes for all people in New Mexico.” Interns can contribute to this mission by bridging the gap between classroom learning in academic settings and the practice of public health.

Those interested in gaining professional learning experiences—including practicums, fellowships, clinical rotations, and volunteer opportunities—are invited to apply. Internships can support the development of aspiring public health professionals by providing real-word experience in a practice setting. NMDOH internships promote professionalism, foster the development of productive work habits, and help students network with public health practitioners.

Interns will have opportunities to develop skills necessary to contribute to governmental public health in the following areas (based upon availability):

  • Community Health
  • Health Equity
  • Environmental Health
  • Epidemiology and Response
  • Research
  • Health Policy
  • Communications
  • Business
  • Information Systems and Technology
  • Laboratory Analytics
  • Healthcare Systems
