Key Points

  • New infections of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs), also known as Sexually Transmitted Diseases (STDs) occur every year.
  • STIs can be serious and even life-threatening, particularly if you get infected while pregnant.
  • Pregnant women should get tested and treated for STIs as serious complications can develop for both the mother and the baby, if care is delayed.
    • The New Mexico Public Health Order requires pregnant people to be tested for syphilis:
      • At first prenatal visit
      • Again, at third trimester, and
      • Again, at delivery
  • Most STIs have no signs or symptoms.
  • You and your partner should get tested to know your status.
  • Have an open conversation with your healthcare provider to learn more about STIs, testing, and treatment options.

Prevention

STIs are preventable and can be reduced by:

  • Being in a long-term, mutually monogamous relationship.
  • Have partners who have been tested with a negative result.
  • Use condoms every time you have sex.
  • Get tested regularly, especially if you are:
    • Sexually active
    • Have new or multiple partners, or
    • Have a partner who has been infected with STI
