- STIs can be serious and even life-threatening, particularly if you get infected while pregnant.
- Pregnant women should get tested and treated for STIs as serious complications can develop for both the mother and the baby, if care is delayed.
- The New Mexico Public Health Order requires pregnant people to be tested for syphilis:
- At first prenatal visit
- Again, at third trimester, and
- Again, at delivery

- Most STIs have no signs or symptoms.
- You and your partner should get tested to know your status.

Prevention
STIs are preventable and can be reduced by:
- Being in a long-term, mutually monogamous relationship.
- Have partners who have been tested with a negative result.
- Use condoms every time you have sex.
- Get tested regularly, especially if you are:
- Sexually active
- Have new or multiple partners, or
- Have a partner who has been infected with STI
