Primary Care Clinics
Overview
To help improve access to health care, in April 2025 the New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH) began to offer primary care services in its Ruidoso and Southeast Heights Public Health Offices. This effort was envisioned as a pilot project that would evaluate the feasibility and effectiveness of providing such services, leveraging existing public health services to provide an integrative model of care.
The pilot project is being funded with a $1.2 million recurring appropriation from the legislature that will be used to staff and equip the two pilot sites and to offset some of the costs for those who are unable to pay for these services.
Services include sick visits, wellness checks, well-child checks, school physicals, chronic disease care, and women’s health care.
An important part of this pilot project is our collaboration with the Mescalero Apache Tribe to provide primary care services to its members out of the Ruidoso Public Health Office. The creation of this clinic will increase provider availability, improve general access to care, strengthen local infrastructure, reduce travel and wait times, as well as honoring the voice of the Mescalero Apache people.
