Comprehensive Cancer Control Program

Cancer is New Mexico's second leading cause of death. A cancer diagnosis changes a person's life forerver - and that of their families.

The Comprehensive Cancer Control Program’s purpose is to reduce the cancer burden on all New Mexicans through promoting prevention, screening and early detection, access to critical services, and collaboration among public and private organizations, departments, and agencies.

  • Prevention means promoting healthy habits and the environments that enable people to make healthy choices. People are more likely to make healthy choices when walking trails are safe and available, healthy foods are affordable, and nicotine cessation programs are easily accessible. Our program works with communities to design and implement strategies that meet your community needs. For an example, see this initiative in Cuba, New Mexico.
  • Screening and early detection programs help identify cancer when there are no symptoms yet in its early stages when it is easier to treat. For colorectal cancer, screening can also prevent cancer when polyps (abnormal growths) are removed through colonoscopies. See our resources below or reach out to program to receive information about the clinical learning programs we support, including Project ECHO.
  • No one should face their cancer journey alone. Our program provides support to a variety of organizations that provide services; the New Mexico Cancer Support and Treatment Directory has a searchable directory.
  • Collaboration makes for more efficient use of resources and enables greater impact. Our program supports the work of the New Mexico Cancer Council a public/private partnership working to reduce the burden of cancer in New Mexico. You can join as an individual or an organization, get involved in one of the work groups, and build your network.
