New Mexico School-Based Health Center Funding
The New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH), Office of School and Adolescent Health (OSAH), School Based-Health Center Program has historically provided funds to state certified SBHCs.
Funding must be used to support activities related to planning, oversight, maintenance, administration, operation, and delivery of services within one or more SBHC as required by NMDOH SBHC Programs funding formula.
Grant funding awards are based on proposed operations including: size of population being served, number of hours of primary care and behavioral health delivered weekly, and successful submission of a comprehensive data set.

SBHC base funding:
- State certified SBHCs are eligible to receive between $65,000 - $105,000/ year for brick and mortar
- State certified SBHCs are eligible to receive between $19,000 - $29,000/ year for spoke sites (telehealth/ mobile)

The SBHC Mental Health Expansion
The funding was granted to expand suicide prevention and youth behavioral health supports in schools through educational resources, outreach, awareness, multi-component digital platforms and behavioral health services for expenditure in fiscal years 2026 through 2028.
Planning and Special Projects Funding
NMDOH provided funding to the New Mexico Alliance for School-Based Health Care (NMASBHC) to support expansion and planning efforts. The funding will support up to 6 awards up to $50K each for SBHC planning and expansion. Additionally, 2-4 awards will be available for up to $50K depending on project submitted, budget, size of school, etc. for special projects.
- Level 2 SBHC Planning Grants will allow grantees to assess and plan for new SBHCs or expansion of current SBHC services. This can include new brick and mortar SBHCs, new hours of services at existing SBHC, new telehealth services, and new mobile SBHC services. Level 2 SBHC planning grants are available to previous SBHC planning grantees or organizations with history and documentation of previous SBHC experience or planning activities.
- Special Project funding is available to existing SBHC sponsors who would like to pilot special projects with their current SBHC operations. For example, expanding care to serve early childhood programs, pilot new youth outreach or leadership programs, or other innovative initiatives to address community needs.
