November 16 is National Rural Health Day

November 9, 2023 - Public Health - Awareness

SANTA FE — The New Mexico Department of Health’s (DOH) Population and Community Health Bureau (PCHB) joins our rural partners state and nationwide in celebrating and recognizing National Rural Health Day on November 16, 2023. Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham signed a proclamation for Rural Health Day, designating the day to celebrate and support our rural health care leaders, providers, and community members that help New Mexicans stay healthy and safe.

The National Organization of State Offices of Rural Health founded National Rural Health Day (NRHD) in 2011. Held on the third Thursday of every November, NRHD is an opportunity to celebrate the “Power of Rural” by honoring the selfless, community-minded spirit that prevails in rural America.

“Ensuring that New Mexicans in rural areas have access to the full range of healthcare services is one of the Department of Health’s top priorities,” said Miranda Durham, Chief Medical Officer. “While there is still a lot more work to do, National Rural Health Day is a day to thank our rural healthcare providers for helping keep New Mexicans healthy and safe.”

Nearly one in five Americans live in rural communities, who have unique healthcare needs. Today more than ever, rural communities must address accessibility issues, a lack of healthcare providers, the needs of an aging population suffering from a greater number of chronic conditions, and larger percentages of un- and underinsured residents.

In New Mexico, DOH PCHB and community partners will host health fairs at the following locations and residents are encouraged to attend to learn more about services provided by DOH and our community partners:

  • November 13 at Luna Community College in Las Vegas, NM 11 a.m. -2 p.m.
  • November 14 at DOH Public Health Office in Anthony, NM 11 a.m. -2 p.m.
  • November 15 at Santo Domingo Pueblo 11 a.m. -2 p.m.
  • November 16 at DOH Public Health Office in Gallup, NM 9 a.m. -12 p.m.
