NM WIC marks breastfeeding week with statewide events
SANTA FE – The New Mexico Women, Infants, and Children (NM WIC) program is using World Breastfeeding Week (Aug. 3-7) to highlight the importance of breastfeeding in promoting the health and well-being of infants, children and families.
This year's state theme is “Protect Breastfeeding: Discover your WIC Network.” Across New Mexico, local NM WIC offices will host events and share resources to support breastfeeding families during the week, helping them connect to guidance, tools and community.
“Breastfeeding plays a vital role in the health of both infants and mothers, and New Mexico WIC is here to celebrate and support that journey,” said Kendall Pluta, NM WIC state breastfeeding manager. “Our program empowers families by offering the lived experience of peer counselors, the clinical guidance of lactation specialists and practical education on nutrition and breastfeeding basics.”
New Mexico WIC serves about 528,000 families statewide each year. The program offers free breastfeeding support, healthy food, nutrition counseling and referrals to health and social services for eligible women, infants and children. WIC’s breastfeeding services are tailored to meet families where they are, with culturally responsive care and personalized support.
In 2025, New Mexico’s WIC program earned the USDA Breastfeeding Gold Award of Excellence for the third consecutive year.
Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham honored the observance by issuing an official proclamation recognizing World Breastfeeding Week in New Mexico. The proclamation acknowledges the essential role breastfeeding plays in improving maternal and child health and reaffirms the state’s commitment to supporting families through programs like WIC.
