Photo of the location. The New Mexico Department of Health’s Portales Women, Infants, Children program (WIC) will host its annual World Breastfeeding Week, Breastfeeding: Foundation of Life Event during the week of July 27th to August 2nd at the Portales Public Health Office from 1-3 pm.

Every afternoon during the week the Breastfeeding Peer Counselors will have a table set up in the lobby of the WIC office. On this table there will be information on breastfeeding, tips for breastfeeding, along with visual demonstrations of pumps and of the contents of breastmilk. The event is designed to help our moms understand the benefits of breastfeeding and the basics of breastfeeding to help them succeed in their breastfeeding goals. It will be a come and go event for the convenience of our attending moms. There will be lactation cookies served as well as milk. There will be donations from community members that will be raffled off on August 2nd. Moms will be eligible to receive a raffle ticket every day they attend the event.

“Breastfeeding is the best food you can give your baby,” said Department of Health Secretary Lynn Gallagher. “Our Breastfeeding Week events educate New Mexico families of all the ways breastfeeding protects, promotes and supports the health of our children.”

WIC services approximately 700 participants in Roosevelt County per month.
