State of NM Statements Regarding COVID-19 Nursing Home

Department of Health Cabinet Secretary Kathy Kunkel:

The New Mexico Department of Health a is grateful to Genesis HealthCare for its decision to convert Canyon Transitional Rehabilitation Center to a facility exclusively for elderly COVID-19 patients. The result will be patients in and around Bernalillo County will be able to get the treatment and quality of care necessary to give them the best possible opportunity to recover and rehabilitate from COVID-19 infection. It will also allow infection-free seniors to be able to stay at their present facilities free of the heightened risk of viral spread.

We also recognize the concern and worry of families of current Canyon Transitional Rehabilitation Center residents. We want them to know their loved ones are in good hands with our colleagues of the New Mexico Aging & Long-Term Services Department, with whom we will work to assure their elders will be transitioned to COVID-19-free facilities and that their health and safety will remain a top priority.

Aging & Long-Term Services Department Cabinet Secretary Katrina Hotrum-Lopez:

We are taking these measures to protect those who are infected and those who are not. We absolutely must separate individuals who are positive from those who are not and do everything within our ability to save lives. COVID only nursing facilities will allow us to increase the level of care for those who are COVID-positive and protect those who are not. We know that these moves will be difficult for residents and their family members. We are committed to making this process as smooth as possible. Our Ombudsman volunteers are available to assist in this time of transition. If you or your loved one need support please call our Ombudsman line at 1-866-451-2901.

My most sincere gratitude to the residents and their loved ones. I know this is an incredibly difficult situation. Please know these changes were not made lightly, we are working with Canyon Transitional to do everything that we can to ensure moved residents are safely transitioned to their new facility.
