DOH hosts special enrollment events during National Farmers Market Week

SANTA FE, NM — The New Mexico Department of Health (DOH) will host special enrollment events this week to help eligible families and seniors access fresh, local food through the state’s Farmers’ Market Nutrition Program as part of National Farmers Market Week, August 3-9.

The program, now serving 12,795 families and seniors statewide, provides $50 to $100 in annual benefits that can be used at 100 participating farmers markets across New Mexico. From January 2020 to July 2025 the program has distributed almost $7 million to support local agriculture and improve food access.

“Farmers markets strengthen communities by connecting people with fresh, local foods and supporting our state's agricultural economy,” said Veronica Griego, the market nutrition program’s manager for the New Mexico Department of Health (NMDOH). “This week is an invitation to support your local farmers, celebrate traditional New Mexican foods, and connect with your community.”

Staff will be available to issue and renew farmers market cards for eligible participants, assist with benefit enrollment and answer questions about shopping using the SoliMarket shopper card or app at two special events:

  • Monday August 4, from 8 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. at the Española Farmers Market, 1005 Railroad Avenue in Española.
  • Saturday August 9, from 8 a.m. to noon at the Tri County Farmers Market, 6th Street and University Avenue in Las Vegas.

National Farmers Market Week, now in its 26th year, is spearheaded by the Farmers Market Coalition and officially recognized by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. The week honors farmers, market staff and community organizations that make it possible for families and seniors across to access nutritious, locally grown food.

New Mexico’s markets offer fresh vegetables, fruit, herbs, blue and white corn posole, honey, green chile, dried chile pods, and pinto beans—all eligible for purchase using program benefits.
