Department of Health, Luna County Government celebrate grand opening of new Luna County Public Health Office

DEMING – The New Mexico Department of Health (DOH) and Luna County Government Friday joined the Deming-Luna County Chamber of Commerce to cut the ribbon signifying the grand opening of the new Luna County Public Health Office in Deming, New Mexico.

“I cannot express my gratitude enough to every person and every agency and organization that has worked years to make this new facility a reality,” said DOH Secretary Patrick Allen. “Their long-term care and commitment will assure better health care access and improved health outcomes for Luna County residents from all walks of life now and for years to come.”

The new facility at 1510 South Slate St. replaces the long-time former location on South Silver St.  It provides improved ADA accessibility, exam rooms, meeting rooms and is centrally located near Mimbres Memorial Hospital.

Funding for the public health office came from a combination of funds acquired over a period of years from the DOH, state appropriations, Luna County government funds, and community development block grants funds acquired by the Southwest New Mexico Council of Governments.

The new public health office is operated in a building owned by Luna County Government and houses important public health programs including:

  • Clinical services such as immunizations, breast and cervical cancer screenings, harm reduction, and testing for sexually transmitted diseases and the Families First program, which provides prenatal health and support during pregnancy.
  • The DOH’s Childrens’ Medical Services, which provide for children and youth with special health care needs.
  • The Women, Infants and Children (WIC) special supplemental nutrition assistance program for low-income pregnant, postpartum and nursing (breastfeeding) parents, infants and children up to age five.
  • Vital Records services for certified copies of birth and death records.

The public health office also provides an outdoor space honoring Deming resident and DOH Health Promotion Specialist Rebecca Sanchez who passed away in 2021.

“We are honoring Rebecca with a warm, welcoming, nurturing outdoor space. A place to sit by the Tree of Life, a sculpture symbolizing Rebecca’s legacy and commitment to helping the community she loved so much.” said Dawn Sanchez, DOH Acting Deputy Secretary and Chief Operating Officer.  “Thank you to Keep Luna County Beautiful’ for accepting our grant application to create this wonderful space.”
