Final Rules Published for the HIS Act Advisory Committee

State Health Department announces March 18 public meeting

The New Mexico Department of Health announced today the final rules outlining the duties and responsibilities of the Health Information System (HIS) Act Advisory Committee have been published in the New Mexico Register (volume XXVII, Issue #3, publication date: February 12, 2016). Pursuant to the rules, the first advisory committee meeting will occur on Friday, March 18 @ 2:00 PM - 5:00 PM at the NM State Library, 1209 Camino Carlos Rey, Santa Fe, NM.

The HIS Act authorizes the Department of Health to collect, analyze, and disseminate health information to assist:

  1. in the performance of health planning and policymaking functions;
  2. consumers in making informed decisions regarding health care; and
  3. in administering, monitoring, and evaluating a statewide health plan.

The HIS Act advisory committee will make recommendations to the Secretary of the Department of Health. The advisory committee will review and make recommendations for reports that will address public concerns regarding health information and access to health care, recommendations on how to present health information to a general audience, the best methods for effective dissemination of health information reports, and advise the Department of Health in carrying out the provisions of the HIS act.

“The publishing of the final rules for the Health Information System Act Advisory Committee and setting the date for the first meeting are important steps in the Department of Health’s desire to be more transparent in providing health data to the public,” said Department of Health Secretary Retta Ward, MPH. “The Department wants to provide data of the highest quality so that New Mexicans can be better informed about their health and the healthcare system in New Mexico.”

The New Mexico Department of Health will be taking nominations for advisory committee members from February 12-26. Please send a CV/Resume of the nominee to Victoria Dirmyer. If you were nominated previously or during the time of the public hearing, your information is already on file.

If there are any questions about the rules or the upcoming advisory committee meeting, please contact Victoria Dirmyer.
