Education Assistance for Medical & Dental Students

The New Mexico Department of Health announced today it is now accepting applications from medical and dental students for the New Mexico Health Service Corps Stipend.

In exchange for the stipends, which will help cover education costs, medical and dentistry students will commit to serving two years of service upon completion of their program in a rural, medically underserved area or clinic in New Mexico.

In order to overcome shortages of physicians, dentists, nurse practitioners and physician assistants in our state, legislative funding from the Rural Primary Health Care Act is allocated each year to support state medical students while improving New Mexico medical services.

The application process has been changed from fall to spring to be more competitive with other health care workforce development programs. This is the first time in the program’s 19 year history that applications were available so early in the year.

The application deadline is April 29, 2016.

Currently in New Mexico there are 202 physician openings, 71 nurse practitioner openings, 26 physician assistant openings, and 41 dentist openings around our state according to the 3RNet Healthcare Jobs recruiting website. Applications and more information about the New Mexico Health Service Corps stipend program can be found in the Primary Care & Rural Health section of our website.
