Arizona Vital Records (resource)

The Bureau of Vital Records for the State of Arizon is responsible for maintaining and issuing certified copies of vital records, including birth, death, fetal death certificates and certificates of birth resulting in stillbirth for events that occurred in Arizona. The Bureau of Vital Records officially began recording birth and death events in July, 1909. However, it maintains a sampling of delayed birth records of Arizona citizens (from 1855) and death records (from 1877) from other sources.

The national standard for estimating gestational age of newborns, until recently, relied on the interval between the first day of the mother’s last normal menstrual period and the date of birth. Beginning with 2014 national birth data released in December 2015, the National Center for Health Statistics transitioned to the obstetric estimate of gestation defined as the birth attendant’s final estimate of gestation at delivery.

Medicaid-paid births were evaluated for relationship with select indicators of medical care access and utilization and impact on infant health. The infant health indicators were low birth weight and preterm births. Statistically, Medicaid indicators relate to preterm births and low birth weight. Mother’s medical and behavioral risk factors were the only factors that significantly interacted with Medicaid indicators to affect preterm birth and low birth weight.

All deaths that occurred in New Mexico are included regardless of the residence of the worker. Birth Mothers' Who Attained a High School Degree or Higher (resource)

A mother's education level affects decisions directly influencing her and her children's health. Worldwide, higher maternal education is linked to decreases in low birth weight, infant mortality, and maternal mortality. Level of education is related to children's physical health and academic outcomes, both as children and adults. Maternal education is associated with children's nutritional status and potential obesity. Children of mothers with a high school diploma or less have a higher likelihood of adolescent obesity. Higher education levels are associated with maternal reproductive decisions including contraceptive use, having fewer children, and a later age of marriage.
